Lumenis M22 IPL
Intense pulse light (IPL) has been used in dermatology practices for several years as a treatment for rosacea and acne. IPL from the Lumenis uses light of 590nm for ocular treatments targeting ocular rosacea and Meibomian gland dysfunction. When applied to the skin, this 590nm light causes the blood cells in the abnormal telangiectasias (small blood vessels) to absorb the light, coagulate, and, finally, to close the blood vessels. This closing of the abnormal blood vessels decreases both inflammatory mediators and bacterial overgrowth; eventuality we began to observe an improvement in Meibomian gland dysfunction/ocular rosacea and subsequent dry eye disease signs and symptoms.
Treatment protocol
- The session only take a few minutes.
- Patients are comfortably seated on a treatment chair, preferably tilted.
- The optometrist or ophthalmologist ensures the patient is wearing eye protection to protect their eyes from the light. They then apply a hydrogel on the skin to protect it.
- A series flashes are then applied from tragus to tragus (inner ear), using the nominal selected power.
- 4 treatments (or more) are required using the Lumenis M22. Patient skin type and any medication contraindications are assessed prior to treatment.
